Goals and Activities of the Commission on Chemical Terminology

Chemical terminology is the foundation of precise communication. It plays a crucial role not only in chemistry itself but also in related scientific fields such as pharmacy, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Consistent and unambiguous nomenclature is essential in scientific discourse, publications, patents, and textbooks, as well as in important official and customs documents.

To ensure flawless information exchange, the rules of chemical nomenclature must be publicly accessible and fully consistent with European standards, as well as the recommendations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

A uniform chemical language guarantees precision, which is of paramount importance in many key sectors of the economy. The correct identification of compounds, their forms, processes, and raw materials is fundamental to legislation, environmental protection, pharmaceutical production, and international trade.

With this in mind, the Commission on Chemical Terminology of the Polish Chemical Society pursues the following goals and tasks:

• Standardizing Language: Creating consistent and unambiguous chemical terminology for the needs of science and the economy.

• Advisory Support: Developing linguistic opinions and providing advice to public administration, businesses, and educational institutions.

• Promoting Precision: Ensuring the stability and universality of chemical terms.

• Collaborating with Linguists: Consulting neologisms and the adaptation of foreign words into Polish chemical terminology with the Council for the Polish Language and the Committee on Linguistics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

• Updating Standards: Continuously adapting nomenclature to the latest IUPAC guidelines.

• Ongoing Operations: Carrying out other necessary work related to the development of chemical terminology.
